My grandmother used to take me to haberdashers with her, cos she used to babysit me, and she used to make a lot of clothes by hand. I would wander off, leaving her to choose her fabrics and whatnot, and I’d go straight to the button wall. The button wall was a vast rack of tubes of buttons. Hundreds of tubes, each with a sample button on the lid. I’d sit there, quietly on my own, helping myself to buttons I liked the look of. Sure, it was shoplifting, but I was, like, a little kid. And I did end up with a pretty awesome collection of buttons.
